It was the walk down the boardwalk that led onto the plane, when I realized, here it goes, the journey of a lifetime. The plane took forever to take off, but when it did, I peered down, watching the scenery slowly shrink, despite my fear of heights. Seeing the cars, shrink to toy size, then tiny moving specks along grey ribbons that curlique-d across green felt. Goodbye Chicago.
Hello Washington D.C. The plane lands safely, albeit with the usual bumps that come with landing, and I am carried with the crowd to the luggage claim. The baggage claim was extraordinarily slow, but no worries, I soon saw my bloated, black suitcase lying on the belt.
Got picked up by my dad's friend, who I'll be staying with (for sake of privacy, we'll call him Matt) and we took the metro, and lugged the suitcase another mile to his apartment, surrounded by embassies. It's a beautiful neighborhood, safe and relatively quiet. Tomorrow I start work. Nervous, completely unsure of how formal I should dress, but hey, I'm here, let's make the most of it.
Here's to a new start, a new life, in a new place. And tomorrow begins anew again, in Bethesda, Maryland.
"'Recalled to life'. That's a blazing strange message."
